Advertisement Analysis
Pepsi-Cola Commercial
The Content Of The Advertisement
This advertisement shows a boy buying drinks from a vending machine. He purchases two can of
Coke, and which he stands on it to purchase a can of Pepsi. The advertisement ends with the Pepsi logo
spinning.
Denotation & Connotation
Denotation: We see that the boy walks towards a vending machine on a hot day, looking to buy a drink.
The boy purchases two cans of Coke, then stands on it to buy a can of Pepsi.
Connotation: The advertisement is an effort of Pepsi to defame Coke. The act of the boy standing on
two cans of Cokes indicates that Coke is far from being the same level of Pepsi. This further points out
that, instead of buying Coke, you should buy Pepsi, which is better.
The Overall Message
Although this advertisement was banned for directly defamed the rival, this was a smart advertising
strategy from Pepsi, when they try to boost their product's name by lining themselves higher than their
rival. Since Coke and Pepsi is the biggest soft drink rivalry, both always try to enhance their product,
either make it look more refreshing, more tasty; or even further, cast aspersions on each other.
